![]() ![]() Stopping from 70 mph required 174 feet, an enormous 22-foot improvement. The extra-starch suspension and tires don’t feel too extreme as the sport model still rides well, and skidpad grip increased from 0.77 g to 0.80 g. At low revs, it tends to drone.įor the extra five grand, sport customers also a get firmer suspension that lowers the wagon by about an inch, lower-profile tires, heated front seats, and some dressed-up body trim. This powertrain also has a useful manumatic feature that doesn’t override the driver’s commands, and the engine sounds satisfyingly aggressive once it hits the midrange. Not sports-car standards, but quite good in the suv world. Our four-wheel-drive sport (front drive is available) ran to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds, through the quarter in 15.4 seconds at 90 mph, and merrily on to a speed-governed 121 mph. The new sport model, which commands a $5000 premium over the $24,595 base four-wheel-drive model, enjoys 264 almost raucous ponies from a dohc 3.6-liter v-6 with a six-speed automatic transmission. Although the powertrain is nothing to write home about, it does go about its business with reasonable smoothness and is generally hard to fault. Coupled to a five-speed automatic transmission, this combination is good for 8.3-second runs to 60 mph and an electronically limited 109-mph top speed. Until this, all Equinoxes had a 3.4-liter pushrod v-6 making 185 horsepower. As a result, for 2008 it receives the automotive equivalent of a botox injection: a sport model with more horsepower. they definitely did something right. The three-year-old Equinox is, in automotive terms, getting a tad gray around the temples. being a 2008, the safety features may be out of date by today's standards, but. but so far, it's still alive and seems to be developing well.įor us to be able to walk away from something like that. I won't say that there weren't some complications. We were in pain - my hands were pretty cut up from broken glass, and we both had bruising and probably cracked ribs from the seatbelts, but we walked away from the wreck.Īs for my unborn kid. We both were able to literally walk away. I had the presence of mind to turn on my hazard lights, fearing another car would hit me. The Equinox rolled at least once, then landed back on its wheels. I remember thinking that rolling was inevitable. My car veered left and to the side after impact. thus, I slammed into it, my cruise control still set to 75 mph. There were no lights, no flares, and I didn't see it until it was too late to react. Someone in front of us, uninsured and driving on a revoked license, had fallen asleep at the wheel, hit the beginning of the guardrail, bending it inward like a paperclip, and flipped his car - a late 90's full sized SUV. I actually just got done moving, and was able to fit quite a bit of my furniture in the back. It's great for driving on dirt roads, has done well in snow, has good acceleration, good mileage (on a full tank, I was able to drive from Albuquerque to Flagstaff and still have somewhat more than a quarter tank), and the cargo space is great. There have been no real issues, and the mother in law still says the back seats are comfortable. I've been on another road trip to San Diego, CA (from Albuquerque) as well as to Lubbock, TX. It is now June of 2016, I still am driving and enjoying my Equinox. Great for those camping trips to places where the campgrounds aren't all paved over. Good cargo space, and just a great overall SUV. It's got reasonable muscle, rides smoothly, and can handle light off roading (don't get too crazy, though). Took it on a road trip from Albuquerque to LA and San Diego with fiance and future mother in law recently - did very well, and my future mother in law who sat in the back the whole way commented about how comfortable it was. ![]()
